Clementine Nkweta-Salami, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan, has condemned the ongoing violence in Al Fasher, North Darfur.
Nkweta-Salami expressed deep sadness and frustration over the attacks on civilians and essential facilities.
“This is heartbreaking and must stop,” she stated. “There is no excuse for direct attacks on civilians and hospitals.”
Fighting in Al Fasher escalated on September 12, threatening thousands of lives, particularly in camps for internally displaced people.
Initial reports indicate that healthcare facilities have also been impacted. The number of civilian casualties remains unknown.
The conflict has devastated lives and essential infrastructure in the city.
Al Fasher, home to hundreds of thousands of displaced individuals, faces a severe risk of famine.
The Zamzam camp is already experiencing confirmed famine conditions.
Sudan’s public health system has suffered significantly, with many facilities destroyed or abandoned.
This leaves over five million people without access to healthcare services.
“These attacks are a violation of humanitarian principles,” Nkweta-Salami said.
“All parties must uphold international humanitarian law and protect civilians from harm.”
