The United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has strongly denounced the recent outbreak of violence that led to the tragic loss of numerous civilians in Jonglei State, located in the eastern part of the country.
Reports indicate that nearly 30 civilians lost their lives in an assault on a cattle camp situated in Duk Padiet County last Thursday. The attack is believed to have been carried out by armed youth from the Pibor area, targeting cattle in what appeared to be a raid.
While UNMISS did not confirm the precise casualty count, local authorities mentioned on Sunday that the number of civilian deaths had surged to at least 28, as reported in local media.
This distressing incident marks the first of its nature in 2024.
Jonglei and Pibor regions have a history of susceptibility to violence, often instigated by conflicts related to cattle raids and retaliatory clashes between communities.
UNMISS has emphasized its commitment to engaging with national, state, and county authorities to help “de-escalate the situation.” The mission has called upon all parties involved to halt the violence, refrain from retaliatory actions, and seek peaceful resolutions to address their grievances.
Highlighting the urgency of the matter, UNMISS has urged the authorities of Jonglei State and the Greater Pibor Administrative Area to initiate dialogues, ensure the prosecution of the perpetrators, and take proactive measures to prevent any further escalation of violence.
