UN envoy holds ‘constructive’ talks with Sudan’s Dagalo

United Nations spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said on Tuesday that envoy Pekka Haavisto has met Sudanese leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo as part of ongoing efforts to ease the country’s escalating conflict.

The meeting was held within a series of preliminary consultations led by the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy, aimed at exploring political options to reduce tensions and strengthen civilian protection.

Dujarric described the talks as constructive, saying they allowed both sides to exchange views on ways to curb violence and prevent further deterioration in vulnerable communities.

During the discussions, Haavisto received a detailed briefing from Dagalo, president of the Tasis Alliance, on military developments since the outbreak of war and the evolving role of the Rapid Support Forces within governing structures.

Dagalo also outlined his forces’ responses to international peace initiatives, highlighting efforts to address political grievances and proposals supporting humanitarian ceasefires to ease civilian suffering nationwide.

The talks focused on identifying practical steps to scale down military operations while creating space for diplomacy and coordinated humanitarian access in conflict-affected regions.

Participants reviewed the worsening humanitarian situation, as displacement, food shortages and insecurity continue to intensify hardships for millions trapped in contested areas.

The United Nations considers the consultations an early but necessary step toward restoring dialogue, seeking openings for peace amid Sudan’s prolonged and complex crisis.
