UN Special Envoy for Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, has urged rival forces to accept a proposed three-month humanitarian truce to halt fighting and protect civilians.
The truce, initiated by the US, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, aims to enable aid delivery and pave the way for a permanent ceasefire.
Lamamra described the proposal as a “rare chance” to ease suffering and open space for dialogue toward lasting peace.
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) said it agreed to the truce, while General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army rejected any settlement recognising the RSF as an equal political actor.
Since April 2023, the war between Burhan’s army and the RSF has killed thousands and displaced millions, with mediation efforts so far failing to end the conflict.
