UN expresses condemnation over killing of staff in South Sudan

The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has denounced the killing of one of its staff members in the country.

Charles Kiir Gone, serving with the peacekeeping mission in Wau, was reportedly attacked by armed men in a relative’s home, where he was staying during his leave.

The incident, believed to be linked to cattle rustling, has prompted UNMISS to offer condolences to the family and call for an immediate investigation.

UNMISS head Nicholas Haysom emphasized the real and ongoing threat to the lives of UN peacekeepers in South Sudan and urged authorities to address the issue. Cattle raids and reprisal attacks have been contributing to a vicious cycle of violence in the country.
