The United Nations human rights office reported a devastating escalation of conflict in Sudan, stating that at least 104 people were killed in multiple drone attacks across the Kordofan region since December 4.
Tragically, the victims included 43 children, highlighting the disproportionate impact of the violence on vulnerable populations in the war-torn nation.
Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, expressed profound alarm over the continuing intensification of hostilities within the central and southern Sudanese region.
He specifically cited ongoing clashes involving General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army, the Rapid Support Forces, and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North, underscoring the fragmented nature of the devastating conflict.
The Commissioner further stated that the indiscriminate drone strikes have targeted critical civilian infrastructure and humanitarian sites, including hospitals, a kindergarten, and a United Nations base.
While condemning the lethal attacks, the UN statement did not provide specific details regarding the identity of the party or parties responsible for launching the deadly, targeted aerial assaults.
This tragic loss of life and destruction of essential facilities paints a grim picture of the conflict’s toll on Sudanese civilians, demanding immediate international attention and a renewed push for peace.
The UN continues to advocate for the protection of civilians and accountability for all serious human rights violations committed during the crisis.
