UN human rights chief Volker Turk will visit Sudan on Wednesday, marking his first trip since 2022, the UN human rights office announced Monday.
Turk is expected to visit Port Sudan, civil society figures and the UN country team, seeking dialogue amid deepening national turmoil.
Since April 2023, war between the General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces has killed tens of thousands and uprooted an estimated 13.6 million people.
The United Nations has described the conflict as one of the world’s gravest humanitarian crises, with communities shattered and survival increasingly uncertain.
During the visit, Turk will also travel to Northern State, which has absorbed tens of thousands displaced by violence.
Al Afad hosts about 24,000 displaced people and receives 35 to 40 new families daily, according to the Sudanese American Physicians Association.
The visit is scheduled to continue through Sunday, as Sudan waits for the world to witness its quiet suffering.
