The United Nations is demanding clarification after General Abdel Fattah al Burhan controlled junta expelled two senior World Food Program officials from Sudan without explanation on Wednesday.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric confirmed the WFP’s country director and emergency director were ordered to leave within 72 hours, designated persona non grata.
Dujarric stressed the expulsions occurred at a critical time, as more than 24 million Sudanese face acute insecurity and widespread famine.
“The humanitarian needs in Sudan have never been greater, and millions rely on emergency food and nutrition assistance for survival,” he said.
He added that UN and WFP officials are engaging Sudanese authorities to protest the decision and seek a full explanation.
Junta Foreign Ministry provided no reason for the expulsions, while assuring that cooperation with the WFP would continue despite the order.
Dujarric warned that the situation represents “unprecedented hunger, unprecedented insecurity, and unprecedented humanitarian needs,” urging Sudan to prioritise civilian well-being.
He reaffirmed the UN and WFP’s commitment to delivering vital assistance to Sudanese communities facing escalating violence and starvation.
