UN urges Security Council to refer Sudan conflict to ICC

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has called on the Security Council to refer Sudan’s escalating conflict to the International Criminal Court.

A new report warns that violations are intensifying nationwide, urging urgent international action to stop abuses and hold perpetrators accountable.

It stresses the need to reinforce the arms embargo in Darfur and considers extending restrictions to all regions of Sudan.

All warring parties are urged to engage in serious negotiations to halt hostilities and respect humanitarian law.

The report demands clear orders to prevent sexual violence, arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances, and the release of those held without legal justification.

Attacks and threats against journalists, civil society workers, and human rights defenders must end to protect freedom and safety.

Safeguarding hospitals, schools, water and electricity networks, and other civilian infrastructure is essential to protect communities caught in the fighting.

Humanitarian aid must reach those in need without obstruction, ensuring safe access for workers and secure corridors for civilians fleeing violence.

Restoring basic services, ensuring fair trials, avoiding the death penalty, and supporting victims of gender-based violence are highlighted as urgent priorities.

The report also stresses the importance of supporting women humanitarian workers and preserving civic space for an effective response to Sudan’s deepening humanitarian crisis.
