UN warns of surging violence amid Sudan’s humanitarian crisis

In a stark warning, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that Sudan’s military conflict is worsening.

He highlighted that both rival forces — Burhan’s army and Rapid Support Forces — are intensifying attacks, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis for millions.

Guterres addressed the U.N. Security Council on Monday, expressing concern about regional instability. He noted the potential for conflict to spread from the Sahel to the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.

The report details the dire situation facing the Sudanese population. Many are enduring severe violence, including mass killings, widespread rapes, and the threat of disease.

The conflict erupted in April 2023, following long-standing tensions between military leaders.

This war has resulted in over 24,000 fatalities, as reported by Armed Conflict Location and Event Data.

Over 11 million people have been displaced, creating a significant humanitarian crisis.

More than 3 million have fled to neighboring countries, seeking safety.

Guterres urged both parties to agree to a ceasefire and protect civilians.

He emphasized that humanitarian aid must be allowed to reach those in desperate need.
