UN warns Sudan faces impending catastrophic hunger crisis

An aid agency operating in Sudan has sounded the alarm, stating that levels of hunger and malnutrition, exacerbated by a year of civil conflict, are far graver than previously estimated.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and other humanitarian organizations have highlighted that the collapse of governance and infrastructure has pushed the country to the brink of an imminent famine.

The United Nations has echoed these concerns, asserting that Sudan is on the verge of witnessing “the world’s worst hunger crisis.”

Efforts to provide aid to the embattled Darfur region have been significantly hindered by the ongoing conflict. Moreover, the nation is ill-prepared to commence planting crops for the upcoming growing season in May.

MSF disclosed that one child is succumbing to death every two hours at a camp in North Darfur, where it has screened tens of thousands of displaced individuals. The organization fears that conditions could be even direr in remote areas.

This information comes as a dire warning, underscoring the urgent need for immediate action to avert a humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan.
