UNDP inaugurates medical plant to boost healthcare in Sudan

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) inaugurated a new medical oxygen plant at Al-Manaqil Hospital, aiming to strengthen healthcare access across the region.

Mr. Luca Renda, UNDP Resident Representative, opened the facility, calling it a key step in meeting urgent medical needs. The plant will supply hospitals in Al-Jazirah State and border areas of Sennar and White Nile States.

Othman Youssef Ahmed Al-Hajj, Executive Director of Al-Manaqil Locality, thanked UNDP for addressing oxygen shortages and urged continued support for local healthcare development.

Sheikh Abdul-Moneim Abu Darira praised UN efforts, noting benefits for over two million residents.

Dr. Omar Al-Tay highlighted UNDP’s role in rehabilitating war-damaged health infrastructure and expressed hopes to expand local hospitals, including the dialysis and maternity centres.

Mr. Renda said Al-Manaqil is one of four recently established oxygen plants in Sudan, chosen for its critical need.

He stressed collaboration between citizens and the government to advance healthcare and reconstruction efforts.

The inauguration marks a milestone in UNDP’s strategy to strengthen Sudan’s healthcare system, improve treatment access, and reduce reliance on imported medical supplies.
