UNITAMS concludes Sudan withdrawal, calls for conflict resolution

The United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) has successfully wrapped up its withdrawal from the country on Thursday, concluding its mandated mission.

Expressing gratitude to UNITAMS personnel for their dedication, the UN Secretary-General, through a spokesperson, acknowledged their service to the Sudanese people. While a small team remains in Port Sudan overseeing mission closure, the Secretary-General reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to Sudan.

Concerns were raised in a statement regarding the ten-month conflict, emphasizing the UN’s continued presence through its country team, agencies, and the UN special envoy.

The spokesperson noted that the Sudan conflict is “eroding the rule of law and endangering civilians,” posing a regional threat. The Secretary-General urged all parties to disarm and participate in peace talks for a civilian-led democratic transition.

The UN Country Team will persist in delivering vital aid on the ground. Ongoing international support and cooperation from Sudanese authorities are crucial for successful aid delivery, including visa issuance and movement facilitation for UN personnel.

On December 1st, 2023, the UN Security Council concluded UNITAMS’s mission, establishing a three-month window for staff departure and transferring responsibilities to other UN organizations.

At closure, the UN deployed 245 personnel in Sudan, with 88 in Port Sudan and the rest in Nairobi and Addis Ababa.
