UNSC strongly condemns deadly drone attack in Sudan

The UN Security Council on Friday condemned in the strongest terms a drone attack that killed six Bangladeshi peacekeepers in Sudan.

The strike hit a UN logistics base in Kadugli, South Kordofan, on December 13, 2025, injuring nine others, the Council said.

Members extended their condolences to the families of the victims and the Bangladeshi government, while wishing a swift recovery for those wounded.

The Council described the attack as a blatant violation of international law, warning that such acts pose serious threats to regional peace and security.

Deliberate assaults on UN personnel were denounced, with calls for those responsible to be held accountable under international law.

Council members highlighted that targeting peacekeepers may constitute war crimes, stressing obligations under international humanitarian law.

The Council urged thorough UN investigations, with support from the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), and requested regular updates to Bangladesh, in line with Security Council resolutions 2518 and 2589.

Authorities in Sudan were urged to strengthen protection for UN personnel and improve cooperation with South Sudan to stabilise the disputed Abyei region.

The Council reaffirmed its confidence in UNISFA peacekeepers, commending their courage, professionalism, and dedication in maintaining security in the volatile border area.

The attack comes amid ongoing clashes between General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army and Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which have killed thousands and displaced millions since April 2023.
