US adviser says Burhan rejects Sudan ceasefire proposal again

The senior adviser to the US President on Arab and African affairs has told the UN Security Council that General Abdel Fattah al Burhan has once again rejected a proposal for a humanitarian ceasefire in Sudan.

He said Burhan received an updated draft truce on Friday morning but turned it down again.

Washington says it is closely monitoring the worsening situation on the ground, warning of possible escalation around El Obeid and in the Kordofan region, where civilians continue to bear the heaviest burden of a prolonged war of attrition.

The US official also warned that any use of chemical weapons would not go unanswered, adding that Washington would impose additional sanctions if such allegations are proven.

He further said more than a dozen countries are providing direct military support to both Burhan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces, helping to sustain the conflict.

The United States, he stressed, continues to reject a military solution and is calling for political will from all sides.

He added that upcoming sanctions are intended to send a clear message that impunity will not be tolerated.
