US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met to discuss Sudan’s political future and the civil war.
The meeting, held at the State Department, also focused on regional security and efforts to promote Middle East stability. Rubio thanked Egypt for its steadfast support in securing the release of hostages held by Hamas, the department said Thursday.
Egypt’s Foreign Ministry described the talks as productive, covering strategic partnership, key regional crises, and Egypt’s water security. The meeting comes amid growing alarm over Gaza’s worsening humanitarian crisis, where a blockade has led to mass starvation.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel’s offensive on Gaza has killed over 60,200 Palestinians, mostly women and children. The relentless bombardment has devastated Gaza’s infrastructure and worsened severe food shortages throughout the enclave.
As the conflict continues, international pressure mounts to ease suffering and foster peace in the fragile region. Rubio and Abdelatty’s talks underline urgent diplomatic efforts to stabilize the Middle East and address humanitarian needs.
