US calls South Sudan peace process farcical

The United States has criticised South Sudan’s peace process as “farcical” as opposition leader Riek Machar faces trial.

In a statement on X, the State Department urged Juba to honour the 2018 peace agreement.

It said dialogue cannot be credible while Machar, the first vice president, remains under house arrest.

Machar has been detained since March and faces charges including murder, treason and crimes against humanity.

Washington warned that urgent reforms are needed to prevent renewed civil war.

It called on the transitional government to end misuse of public funds and abuse of US assistance.

South Sudan gained independence in 2011 but fell into civil war in 2013 after President Salva Kiir dismissed Machar.

Despite a 2018 unity deal, clashes between government and opposition forces have intensified in recent months.
