The United States on Sunday condemned a drone attack on a United Nations base in Sudan that killed six Bangladeshi peacekeepers, calling it a serious breach of international norms.
The strike, which hit the UN base in Kadugli on Saturday, also wounded eight other peacekeepers, according to officials.
US senior adviser for Arab and African Affairs Massad Boulos described the attack as a grave violation of efforts to protect peace and civilians, saying it showed a blatant disregard for global security commitments.
In a post on social media platform X, Boulos urged Sudan’s warring parties to stop targeting UN personnel, end hostilities without delay, and allow unhindered humanitarian access as civilian suffering deepens.
The attack comes amid ongoing fighting between General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces, a conflict that erupted in April 2023 and has killed thousands, displaced millions, and plunged Sudan into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
The killed peacekeepers were serving with the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), deployed in the disputed, oil-rich border region between Sudan and South Sudan.
