US confirms 25-mile travel curb kept Sudan’s Burhan from UNGA 80

The United States announced that it restricted the movements of Sudan’s Sovereign Council chief, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and his delegation in New York during this month’s UN General Assembly, confining them to a 25-mile radius—measures that resulted in his absence.

According to an official US notice, the visa restrictions on Burhan for UNGA meetings in New York were imposed under the Foreign Missions Act and authorities delegated by the US Department of State. The decision requires Burhan and accompanying Port Sudan junta officials to obtain prior approval from the Department’s Office of Foreign Missions before any travel beyond a 25-mile radius from Columbus Circle in New York City.

It said the requirement applied for participation in the 80th UN General Assembly session (September 2025), and that the delegation must comply with any additional geographic limits set by the Director or Deputy Director of the Office of Foreign Missions.

The notice added that the condition would remain in force throughout the Sudanese delegation’s stay in the United States during UNGA 80’s high-level week in September 2025.
