US envoy reports improved aid access in Sudan

The US envoy to Sudan on Monday announced a significant improvement in humanitarian aid deliveries to the war-torn country.

Despite ongoing clashes between Burhan’s army (SAF) and rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF), hundreds of trucks have successfully reached previously blocked areas, providing critical supplies to millions facing acute hunger.

The conflict, which erupted in April 2023, has devastated Sudan.

The situation has deteriorated rapidly, with more than half of the population facing acute hunger and famine declared in some regions.

US envoy Tom Perriello expressed concern about the ongoing violence, stating that those in the best position to stop the fighting seem more interested in escalating it.

Despite multiple peace negotiations and truces brokered by the US and Saudi Arabia, the warring sides have failed to reach a lasting agreement.

The latest round of US-brokered talks, held in Switzerland last month, faced challenges due to the absence of Burhan’s army.

Burhan objected to the involvement of the UAE, accusing it of arming the RSF. The UAE has denied these allegations.

While progress has been made in humanitarian access, the overall situation in Sudan remains dire.

The conflict continues to cause immense suffering, with tens of thousands of people killed and millions displaced.
