US says it’s engaging Burhan and Dagalo to halt Sudan war

The United States is in contact with SAF chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Rapid Support Forces leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), or their representatives, through multiple diplomatic channels to end the war, a senior U.S. State Department official said.

Masad Boulos, the U.S. president’s senior adviser for Africa, met Burhan in Switzerland in August and later spoke with Dagalo, the official said. Boulos also held wide-ranging discussions with African Union officials in Addis Ababa in recent days.

The official said the Quartet’s recently endorsed roadmap for Sudan sets a clear timetable: a three-month humanitarian truce followed by a nine-month political process to restore a civilian-led transition.

He added that Washington has imposed sanctions to curb the influence of Sudan’s Islamic Movement and to counter Iran’s regional activities, which he said have fueled instability and civilian suffering. The United States recently sanctioned Jibril Ibrahim, leader of the Justice and Equality Movement, and the al-Baraa bin Malik group, alleging they helped feed the conflict and had links to Iran. JEM has rejected the accusations, and Sudan’s SAF junta said the measures would not help achieve peace.
