The World Economic Forum (WEF) has notified Sudan’s Port Sudan-based SAF junta it does not wish to host Finance Minister Jibril (Gibril/Gebreil) Ibrahim after U.S. sanctions last week, according to Arabic-language posts circulating on X and Facebook.
Sudan’s SAF junta and WEF did not immediately respond to requests for comment shared via public contacts on Sunday.
The U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on Sept. 12 designated Ibrahim—who also leads the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM)—and the Islamist Al-Baraa Bin Malik Brigade under Executive Order 14098, citing actions and policies that threaten Sudan’s peace, security and stability, including links to Iran. The designation adds Ibrahim to the SDN list and freezes any U.S. assets while generally prohibiting U.S. persons from dealings with him.
State Department officials framed the move as part of efforts to curb support for Islamist militias and pressure actors fueling the war. Independent coverage by regional outlets also reported the sanctions and their Iran-related rationale.
