WHO: Famine in Sudan could spread to neighboring regions

The head of the World Health Organization warned famine in Sudan could soon engulf other regions. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said famine is confirmed in parts of Sudan, and the crisis threatens neighbouring South Sudan as well.

“Famine means we are already too late, and people are beginning to die from the effects of undernutrition,” he warned.

He blamed prolonged conflict, forced displacement, economic instability, and climate shocks for driving Sudan’s alarming levels of food insecurity. Ghebreyesus called for a massive scale-up of food assistance, stressing that delays could worsen the humanitarian catastrophe.

“There is no time to waste, but there are limitations to what we can do without humanitarian access,” he added.

Since April 15, 2023, the General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army (SAF) and the RSF have been locked in an unrelenting war with failed mediations. Thousands have been killed, and millions displaced, as Sudan’s political and humanitarian crisis spirals deeper into uncertainty.
