Sudan humanitarian chief blames SAF for airstrike on relief mission

Ezzaddean Mohamed Ahmed Elsafi, chairperson of the National Humanitarian Access Authority (NAHA), condemned what he said was an airstrike by General al-Burhan’s Army (SAF) on a humanitarian convoy in Zalingei, Central Darfur.

In a post on X, Elsafi said the attack occurred only hours after UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and OCHA chief Tom Fletcher and his delegation passed through the same route between Zalingei and Tawila.

“This cowardly and reckless attack on a humanitarian convoy in Zalingei threatens the lives of aid workers and civilians, and shows a blatant disregard for international humanitarian law. The perpetrators must be held to account.” — Ezzaddean Mohamed Ahmed Elsafi (@Ezz_Elsafi)

He described the strike as “cowardly and reckless,” saying it endangered aid workers and civilians and showed the SAF’s continued disregard for international humanitarian law. Such actions, he added, were “deliberate attempts to obstruct life-saving assistance and spread fear among an already suffering population.”

Elsafi urged the international community—including the United Nations and regional partners—to hold those responsible to account and to take urgent steps to protect humanitarian personnel and relief convoys across Sudan.
