Zalingi water lines resume after three-year shutdown

Zalingi, Central Darfur, has begun receiving water again for the first time in nearly three years, after the main pumping station restarted services to the Al-Wadi neighbourhood and Zalingi Teaching Hospital.

A staff member at the hospital, speaking anonymously for security reasons, told Darfur24 that international humanitarian organisations played a key role in restoring the hospital’s water line, as well as parts of the Al-Wadi residential area.

According to the staff member, ongoing meetings between international agencies and the civil administration resulted in reactivating the water system that draws from the Wadi Aribo wells. Pumping to Al-Wadi has reportedly been stable since October, and the line serving the hospital was reconnected last Saturday.

Zalingi saw limited clashes between the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese army in November 2023, fighting that ended with the army’s withdrawal and the RSF’s takeover of the city. A civil administration led by Abdulkarim Yusuf was subsequently formed.
