UAE commits $70M to UN humanitarian efforts in Sudan

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has allocated $70 million to support UN humanitarian agencies in Sudan.

This commitment marks a significant step towards fulfilling its pledge made at the Paris International Humanitarian Conference last April, where the UAE pledged $100 million for Sudan and neighboring countries.

In a statement from Abu Dhabi on Monday, the UAE announced that the funds will primarily benefit key UN agencies such as the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the World Food Programme (WFP), the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the World Health Organization (WHO).

These resources will be directed towards providing essential services like food, health care, livelihood support, emergency shelter, and protection for vulnerable groups.

Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to assisting the Sudanese people, highlighting additional efforts such as establishing an aid air bridge and previous contributions totaling $130 million in humanitarian aid.

The UAE has also supported humanitarian efforts in Chad and South Sudan, including the provision of medical supplies and the construction of field hospitals. The initiative has been praised by Martin Griffiths, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, who expressed gratitude for the UAE’s crucial support in Sudan.
