Algeria’s Belmadi defends Mahrez despite AFCON performances

Algerian star Riyad Mahrez has found himself in the crosshairs of criticism after two underwhelming performances at the Africa Cup of Nations, but head coach Djamel Belmadi has urged fans and pundits to hold their fire.

“Riyad is one of the best players in Africa,” Belmadi declared in a pre-match press conference ahead of Algeria’s crucial final group game against Mauritania. “We can’t forget what he’s achieved, both for club and country.”

Mahrez was instrumental in Algeria’s triumphant AFCON campaign in 2019, but his impact has been muted so far in Ivory Coast. Two draws against Angola and Burkina Faso have left the Fennec Foxes on the brink of a second consecutive early exit from the tournament.

The Manchester City legend, who departed the Etihad last summer for Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ahli, was even substituted in the 2-2 draw with Burkina Faso. Despite the pressure, Belmadi remains resolute in his support.

“These haven’t been Riyad’s best games, that’s a fact,” the coach conceded. “But let’s not write him off just yet. He just won the Champions League with City last season, remember?”

Belmadi emphasized Mahrez’s leadership role and the unshakeable faith the team has in their captain. “He’s our leader,” Belmadi affirmed. “I know what he’s capable of, and so does the entire squad. We have full confidence in him.”

However, the coach remained coy about Mahrez’s starting position against Mauritania, who are themselves chasing their first-ever AFCON victory. “We’ll make our final decisions after careful consideration,” Belmadi said. “Every player needs to be ready to contribute.”

With their backs against the wall, Algeria’s fate hangs in the balance. Whether Mahrez rediscovers his magic or not could be the deciding factor in whether the defending champions rise to the occasion or suffer another heartbreaking early exit. The final act of the Fennec Foxes’ AFCON drama will unfold tomorrow, leaving fans and critics alike on the edge of their seats.
