Kenyan athletics legend Henry Rono passes away at 72

Henry Rono, the renowned former multiple world record holder from Kenya, has died at the age of 72 after a brief illness, as announced by Athletics Kenya.

Rono achieved historic feats in 1978 by breaking four world records within 81 days, excelling in the 3000m, 5000m, 10,000m, and 3000m steeplechase.

Additionally, he set a new world record for the 5000m in 1981. After spending over three decades in the United States starting in 1986, Rono returned to Kenya in 2019.

This sad news follows closely after the recent death of marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum in a road accident last Sunday, adding to the somber atmosphere in Kenya and the global athletics community.
