Sierra Leone declares drug abuse a national emergency

Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has declared drug abuse a “national emergency” in the country, highlighting the urgency to address the prevalence of synthetic drugs among young people.

In an address to the nation, President Bio emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “It is my solemn duty as president to declare a national emergency on drug abuse.” He particularly underscored the menace posed by the synthetic drug known as kush, which has been rampant in Sierra Leone for several years.

To combat this issue, a comprehensive task force comprising government agencies and NGOs has been established. This task force will focus on prevention, treatment, social services support, law enforcement, and community engagement initiatives.

President Bio also revealed ongoing efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks operating within the country. Notably, police commissioner Joseph Lahai reported the seizure of two containers filled with kush in Freetown, leading to the apprehension of seven suspects.

The government’s decisive actions underscore its commitment to tackling the adverse effects of drug abuse and safeguarding the well-being of Sierra Leone’s citizens.
