Israel intensifies Gaza offensive amid new truce talks

Israel launched a new military campaign against Hamas in central Gaza on Wednesday, with Palestinian medics reporting dozens killed in airstrikes, complicating ceasefire talks.

At least 44 Palestinians have died in Israeli strikes since Tuesday, according to health officials.

The Israeli military targeted Hamas militants in central Gaza, operating with intelligence guidance in Al-Bureij, a long-established refugee settlement.

The 98th Division began a precise campaign in East Bureij and East Deir al-Balah, both above and below ground, according to an Israeli statement.

Residents reported tanks entering Bureij and strikes on nearby settlements and Deir Al-Balah. Aya expressed frustration, asking why civilians must suffer and why the world can’t stop the war.

Talks are expected in Doha and Cairo to finalize a ceasefire, with U.S., Qatari, and Egyptian officials meeting to advance a deal that would also release Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners. Jake Sullivan, U.S. national security adviser, said they await Hamas’ response through Qatari mediators.

Hamas has shown a positive view of the proposal but insists on a permanent truce and complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. The U.S. says Israel, as the plan’s originator, is likely to accept it, but Israel demands Hamas’ elimination first.

Islamic Jihad militants arrived in Cairo for ceasefire talks, seeking to end Israeli aggression and facilitate aid. The new Israeli campaign has displaced more families towards Deir Al-Balah.

The Israeli military reported operations in Rafah, targeting Hamas combat units. Rafah, near Gaza’s southern border with Egypt, had sheltered many Palestinians who have since fled again due to Israeli tank advances.

The UN Palestinian refugee agency called for a ceasefire, highlighting the war’s devastating impact on Gaza’s environment and infrastructure.

Israel’s offensive began last October after Hamas militants attacked southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking over 250 hostages.

The conflict has resulted in more than 36,000 deaths in Gaza, with many bodies still under rubble, according to health authorities.
