CAF chief Motsepe aims for re-election

Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe has confirmed his intention to run for a second term, the governing body announced on Friday.

The South African billionaire will contest the elections scheduled for March 2025.

Motsepe, who was elected unopposed in 2021, has garnered support from numerous CAF member associations and zonal union presidents.

His decision to seek re-election follows these requests and the encouragement of key stakeholders.

While no other candidates have officially declared their intentions, the nomination deadline is set for four months before the elections.

Motsepe’s potential challengers remain unknown.

The 62-year-old mining magnate, who boasts a net worth of $3 billion, has been involved in African football since 2003.

He acquired Mamelodi Sundowns, a prominent South African club, and invested heavily in the team, leading them to the African Champions League title in 2016.

Motsepe’s candidacy is backed by FIFA president Gianni Infantino. He was selected to lead CAF after the previous president, Ahmad Ahmad, was banned due to corruption charges.

If re-elected, Motsepe will become the eighth president in CAF’s history, which dates back to 1956.
