Sudan crisis deepens, millions of children face malnutrition

The United Nations issued a dire warning on Friday, highlighting the worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan.

A staggering 3.7 million children under the age of five are projected to suffer from severe acute malnutrition this year alone.

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) jointly expressed deep concern over the dire situation.

“These children are already weakened by hunger. If not reached soon, these children are 11 times more likely to die from preventable diseases than their healthier peers inside Sudan,” the statement warned.

The conflict, which erupted in mid-April 2023 between the Burhan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has devastated the country.

The fighting has spread to 13 of Sudan’s 18 states, causing widespread displacement and immense suffering.

The UN estimates that over 20,000 people have lost their lives, and more than 10 million have been forced to flee their homes.

The ongoing violence has crippled essential services, leaving millions without access to clean water, healthcare, and shelter.

The international community is increasingly alarmed by the deteriorating conditions in Sudan.

The UN and other organizations are urging an immediate end to the fighting to prevent a full-blown humanitarian catastrophe.

The world must act swiftly to provide life-saving aid and support to the millions of Sudanese people in desperate need.
