Sudanese military intelligence has released a man in Abu Karshola, South Kordofan, after allegedly detaining and torturing him for nine days over a Facebook comment criticising the army’s handling of armed robberies in the area, according to sources close to him.
The man, identified as Abdelrahman al-Najoumi, was detained after commenting on a Facebook post in which he criticised the army’s performance in confronting armed looting groups operating around Abu Karshola, the sources told Darfur24.
They said al-Najoumi was subjected to severe beatings throughout his detention.
According to the sources, military intelligence released him only after he signed a written undertaking pledging not to publish posts or comments on social media.
Darfur24 said it was unable to obtain a response from military intelligence regarding the circumstances of his detention or the allegations of torture.
Parts of South Kordofan, particularly eastern localities, have seen a rise in armed robbery amid deteriorating security, widespread weapons possession and weakened local authority.
The insecurity comes as Sudan’s war, which erupted in April 2023, continues to destabilise large parts of the country.
