The leader of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo has reaffirmed his commitment to Sudan’s territorial and social unity during a speech marking Independence Day.
Dagalo stressed the RSF’s stance on supporting the creation of a new national military under civilian oversight, stating, “The RSF neither intends nor aspires to replace the army.” He framed Sudan’s ongoing conflict as a struggle between forces opposed to freedom, democracy, and the vision of a new Sudan.
Key Points from Dagalo’s Speech
Support for Democratic Transition: The RSF reiterated its pledge to protect Sudan’s democratic transition and uphold the goals of the December Revolution, despite what Dagalo described as attempts by adversaries to derail progress through conflict.
Humanitarian Crisis: Highlighting the devastating impact of the war, Dagalo addressed rising humanitarian challenges, including famine, social division, and widespread displacement, compounded by hate speech and incitement.
Call for Peace: He called for an end to the war, emphasizing the need to alleviate the suffering of Sudanese citizens and build a nation founded on the principles of freedom, justice, and peace.
Professional Military Vision: Advocating for the establishment of a professional, national military free from political or ethnic influence, Dagalo stressed the necessity of civilian control over armed forces.
Warning Against Division: He condemned divisive rhetoric based on race or ethnicity and warned against plans by remnants of the former regime to fragment Sudan.
Appeal to the International Community: Dagalo expressed gratitude for international and regional efforts to support Sudan, urging continued assistance to ease the humanitarian crisis.
Concluding his speech, Dagalo underscored the RSF’s determination to pursue peace, unity, and justice, vowing to contribute to the creation of a “new Sudan” through the sacrifices of its people.
The RSF has been embroiled in a protracted conflict with General al-Burhan’s forces (SAF) since April 2023, leading to widespread devastation and displacement across the country.
