Burhan’s govt offended by Kenya’s RSF hosting, recalls envoy

General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army-backed government recalled its envoy from Kenya on Thursday, condemning Nairobi’s decision to host Sudanese Rapid Support Forces.

Foreign Ministry stated the envoy was summoned “for consultations in protest against Kenya hosting the meetings,” according to state news agency SUNA.

RSF and Burhan’s army are locked in a nearly two-year war, announced plans in Nairobi to sign a founding charter for a “peace and unity government.”

Burhan-backed government accused Kenyan President William Ruto of undermining country’s sovereignty, escalating tensions between the two nations.

A source close to the RSF meeting’s organizers revealed that the charter’s signing, originally set for Tuesday, was postponed until the weekend.

Since April 2023, the war has killed tens of thousands and displaced over 12 million, deepening Sudan’s humanitarian crisis.

The country remains divided, with the army controlling the north and east, while the RSF dominates the west and south.

Kenya’s foreign ministry defended its role, calling the RSF meeting “compatible with its peace mediation efforts” aimed at resolving Sudan’s conflict.
