TASIS government to protect civilians after Kernoi violence

The TASIS-aligned Darfur Regional Government expressed deep sorrow over the deadly clashes in the Kernoi area, extending condolences to the families of those killed, wishing the wounded a swift recovery and the safe return of the missing.

In a statement, the government condemned the attacks and the incitement of strife among local communities, vowing full legal accountability for those who planned and carried out the violence. Citing initial findings, it said there were clear indications that influential figures within the Port Sudan SAF junta and allied movements helped fuel the unrest to serve narrow political agendas unrelated to Darfur’s interests. Security and legal institutions, it added, are pursuing investigations to ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice, regardless of position or affiliation.

Authorities urged all components of the Zaghawa heartland and surrounding areas—tribes, clans, civil institutions and religious leaders—to exercise restraint, avoid provocations and reject attempts to drag residents into cycles of revenge. Social cohesion and public awareness, the statement said, are the first line of defense against efforts to undermine community peace.

The government praised the ajawid mediation committee that has addressed the roots of the dispute since 2018, calling its conclusions a key reference for peaceful, customary solutions that preserve dignity and advance justice and reconciliation.

Warning of deliberate escalation, the government said it is mindful of the risks posed by ongoing attempts to inflame tensions. Under Sudan’s 2025 Transitional Constitution, the TASIS administration and state security forces are obliged to protect civilians, safeguard lives and property, and restore public order. The government pledged to take all necessary legal and security measures to protect residents and uphold the rule of law.

It said lasting stability depends on unity and collective action among official authorities, traditional administrations and social forces to isolate instigators and defeat destabilizing agendas. Citizens were urged to cooperate with competent bodies by sharing information that helps establish facts and hold offenders accountable, while humanitarian and medical organizations were asked to assist those affected.
