Burhan signals readiness for dialogue with RSF

General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army (SAF) signalled readiness for dialogue to end the war and uphold the country’s dignity. Speaking in northern Atbara while offering condolences to the family of fallen SAF Maj. Muzammil Abdullah, al-Burhan stressed no talks are ongoing.

He clarified that neither the Quartet – the US, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the UAE – nor any other party is currently engaged. He welcomed genuine peace efforts but rejected attempts to impose a government or settlement against the people’s will, he added.

His remarks preceded planned Quartet meetings in New York aimed at facilitating a peaceful solution to Sudan’s escalating conflict. Burhan’s SAF and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have clashed since April 2023, leaving more than 20,000 dead and 14 million displaced, according to UN reports.

Some US academic studies estimate the death toll at approximately 130,000, highlighting the conflict’s devastating and widening human toll. In July, the Sudanese Founding Alliance or TASIS, led by the RSF, declared a new government headed by RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

As international pressure mounts, Burhan faces mounting scrutiny over its willingness to compromise while maintaining military authority and national cohesion.
