UAE calls for civilian transition to end Sudan conflict

Anwar Gargash, UAE presidential adviser, urged an immediate ceasefire in Sudan on Wednesday.

Speaking at the Reuters NEXT Gulf Summit, Gargash insisted Sudan’s future must be led by civilians, not a military junta.

He said the UAE is currently blocked from playing a humanitarian role in Sudan, unlike its operations in Gaza.

Gargash expressed readiness to scale up aid efforts in Sudan once the country allows the UAE to intervene fully.

Since April 2023, General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces have battled for control, creating the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

Al-Fashir, in the Darfur region, remains the Burhan’s last stronghold and a key target for the RSF-related TASIS government.

Burhan accuses the UAE of supporting the RSF, allegations the UAE has repeatedly denied.

Tensions between Sudan and the UAE have worsened, culminating in a de facto UAE embargo on Sudanese gold exports.
