RSF arrests ‘butcher of El-Fasher’ as crackdown on abuses intensifies

Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) said they have arrested several suspects over violations committed during the takeover of El-Fasher, including a man identified as “Abu Lu’lu’ah,” and referred them to specialized legal committees ahead of prosecution.

The RSF said the arrests were carried out on leadership orders and in line with the law, rules of conduct, and wartime military discipline, stressing compliance with international humanitarian law, “foremost among them the Geneva Conventions.”

The force said the measures aim to prevent actions that “violate human dignity” or contravene moral and legal standards.

Regional and international media have spotlighted the figure known as “Abu Lu’lu’ah,” with France 24 (Arabic) describing him as the “El-Fasher butcher” who filmed executions and posted them to TikTok, and The New Arab identifying him as al-Fatih (al-Fateh) Abdallah Idris, accused of summary killings and coercing captives to chant pro-RSF slogans.

The arrests come following a direct order from the group’s leadership, after the RSF chief vowed to identify and punish all those responsible for violations committed in El-Fasher.

Reiterating that “no one is above the law,” the RSF pledged to “uphold true justice” and hold accountable anyone proven to have committed abuses, “no matter how limited or individual in nature.” It accused media aligned with Sudan’s Islamist movement of exaggerating and politicizing alleged incidents “to advance malicious agendas” and obscure their “historic failures.”
