Aid funding falls sharply amid Sudanese civil war

Funding for humanitarian aid in Sudan has plummeted, leaving tens of thousands fleeing violence with minimal support.

The war between General Abdel Fattah al Burhan’s army and rival Rapid Support Forces, ongoing since April 2023, has created the world’s largest humanitarian crisis.

Some 12.5 million Sudanese are displaced inside and outside the country.

The International Organization for Migration’s $229 million appeal for Sudan is funded at less than 10%, sharply down from last year’s 44%.

IOM chief Amy Pope said the organisation has shipped its last 35 tents, with 2,000 more stuck in customs, far short of need.

In Tawila camps, only 10% of people had reliable water access, and latrines were available to even fewer, assessments revealed.

Pope warned that inadequate initial assistance compounds suffering, forcing repeated displacements toward Chad, Libya, and perilous Mediterranean crossings.

The IOM reported 29 presumed deaths after a rubber boat capsized off Libya, highlighting growing risks for those fleeing Sudan.
