Egypt and Saudi Arabia call for urgent ceasefire to end Sudan crisis

Egypt and Saudi Arabia have stressed the urgent need for a ceasefire in Sudan and the launch of an inclusive political process. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty spoke with Saudi counterpart Prince Faisal bin Farhan, highlighting the “deep and strong fraternal ties” between the two nations.

The ministers emphasised creating conditions to preserve Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and stability amid escalating violence, according to a Foreign Ministry statement. Sudan has been engulfed in deadly fighting since April 2023 between the General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s army and Rapid Support Forces, killing at least 40,000 people.

The conflict has displaced 12 million citizens, according to World Health Organization estimates, leaving millions in dire humanitarian need. Last week, the RSF agreed to join a humanitarian truce proposed by Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the US, and the UAE, aiming to ease civilian suffering.

However, Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman al-Burhan rejected any truce until the RSF first lays down its weapons.
