Port Sudan PM Kamil Idris quits, leaves for Switzerland, sources

Sources close to the Port Sudan administration say its prime minister, Kamil Idris, has submitted his resignation just months after being appointed as the civilian face of rule by Sudan’s Islamist movement from the Red Sea city.

The sources said Idris left Port Sudan for Switzerland two weeks ago, in a move they described as another setback for the Port Sudan administration, which is dominated by leading figures of the Islamist movement.

According to the same sources, Idris had come under pressure from Islamist leaders to step aside. They described him as a mere “extra” in the Port Sudan administration, brought in as a civilian figure from Switzerland with connections to international organisations in order to give a veneer of legitimacy to the Islamist-led system.

However, they said Idris failed to play the role expected of him and had effectively become a “burned card” for the Port Sudan authority.
