South Sudan dismisses key officials in major government reshuffle

President Salva Kiir Mayardit dismissed four ministers, a governor, and the police chief, while appointing a vice president in a sweeping Cabinet reshuffle.

James Wani Igga was named vice president and chair of the Economic Cluster, replacing Benjamin Bol Mel, who was fired last week.

Minister of Justice Joseph Geng Akech was removed, and Michael Makuei Lueth, former information minister, was appointed in his place.

Simon Mijok Mijak, roads and bridges minister, was replaced by Peter Lam Both, according to the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation announcements.

Josephine Naphon, environment and forestry minister, was dismissed and replaced by Mabior Garang Mabor in the latest decree.

Michael Makuei, information, communication, technology, and postal services minister, was relieved of duty, with Ateny Wek Ateny appointed as his successor.

General Abraham Manyuat, inspector general of the National Police Services, was removed and replaced by General Saeed Chawul Lom.

Central Equatoria State Governor Rubi Mujung was replaced by Emmanuel Adil Anthony, completing the significant personnel changes announced by Kiir.

Wani Igga, a veteran politician, resumes his previous SPLM roles as vice president and deputy chair, after being dismissed earlier in February.

The president provided no explanations for the dismissals, exercising powers granted under South Sudan’s ongoing 2018 peace agreement.

Since independence in 2011, South Sudan has faced civil war and fragile peace agreements, including Riek Machar’s house arrest since March under current accords.

The reshuffle highlights Kiir’s continued control over government appointments, though changes affecting officials from other parties require consent from their leadership.
