TASIS: Trump pledge boosts chances of fair Sudan settlement

The minister for cabinet affairs in the TASIS government, Ibrahim al-Mirghani, has welcomed remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump on using his presidential clout to help end the war in Sudan, saying they could strengthen efforts to reach a political solution in coordination with the regional Quad.

Al-Mirghani said the Saudi-UAE-Egypt-U.S. initiative had underlined the need to exclude the Islamic Movement, the National Congress Party and extremist groups from any political process that will shape Sudan’s future, arguing that this approach opens the door to a comprehensive and just settlement.

He also thanked Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for placing the Sudan crisis on the agenda of Saudi-U.S. talks, describing it as an important step to galvanise international efforts to stop the fighting.

Trump had earlier revealed that resolving Sudan’s conflict was not initially among his priorities, but that his recent talks with the crown prince in Washington prompted him to focus on the file, adding that Riyadh would play a “strong and effective” role in ending the war.
