Talks between US and Ukrainian delegations in Florida aimed at ending the war with Russia remain difficult, a Kyiv-aligned source told AFP on Sunday.
They unfold as Ukraine confronts intensifying military and political strains, including a corruption scandal and an imminent visit to Moscow by US President Donald Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff.
The source said discussions were “constructive,” yet the search for workable language and realistic solutions continued to slow progress.
All sides, the source noted, want “a practical result” that could open the door to future negotiations between Washington and Moscow.
Ukraine’s military leadership joined closed-door sessions to address sensitive issues central to any potential agreement.
A second source familiar with the talks said Washington hopes to finalise key points during the Florida meetings before travelling to Moscow.
Territorial questions remain especially contentious because US delegates see themselves strictly as mediators rather than advocates for Ukraine, the source added.
According to this second source, US officials are exerting some pressure on Kyiv to accept a deal that could move diplomacy forward.
Despite the tensions, both sides insist they are working constructively to find a path toward resolution.
