US President Donald Trump is weighing possible air strikes on Iran, as the White House warns protesters are being killed on the streets.
The prospect of military action hangs over Washington, even as officials insist diplomatic channels with Tehran remain quietly open.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Iran has adopted a markedly different tone in private talks with Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff.
She told reporters the president keeps all options on the table, describing air strikes as one of many paths available.
Leavitt stressed diplomacy remains Trump’s first choice, signalling the administration’s interest in exploring private messages from Iranian officials.
Iran’s foreign ministry earlier confirmed a communication channel between top diplomat Abbas Araghchi and Witkoff, despite the absence of formal relations.
Trump said Sunday the US military was considering “very strong options” after what he described as Iran crossing a red line.
He added Iranian leaders had sought a meeting, but warned action might come before any talks could take place.
Rights groups report a growing death toll, with fragments of information emerging despite a days-long internet shutdown.
Leavitt appeared to confirm fatalities, saying Trump does not want blood on Tehran’s streets, yet fears that is already happening.
