BMW recalls hundreds of vehicles over starter motor fire risk

BMW has announced a large-scale recall of hundreds of thousands of vehicles produced between July 2020 and 2022.

The Munich-based automaker cited a technical fault in the starter system that could spark a fire, posing a serious risk to drivers.

In Germany alone, 28,582 vehicles will be recalled, though BMW has not yet revealed the total number of cars affected worldwide.

The fault involves excessive wear in the starter motor solenoid, which can prevent the engine from starting and trigger a dangerous short circuit.

In severe cases, the short circuit could cause localized overheating and ignite a fire while the vehicle is in motion, officials warned.

BMW advised owners not to leave vehicles unattended while the engine is running and to contact service centres immediately for inspection.

The recall encompasses 2 Series Coupe, 3, 4, 5, and 7 Series sedans, plus 6 Series Gran Turismo, X4, X5, X6, and Z4 models.

Vehicles with starter relays produced between July 2020 and July 2022 are especially vulnerable, as are cars with faulty starter motors installed during previous repairs.

This recall follows a similar September campaign covering vehicles produced from 2015 to 2021, which involved corrosion caused by water leaks in starter systems.

Unlike the earlier case, the current issue stems from physical wear, making fires more likely while the engine is running rather than when parked.

BMW has not disclosed the estimated cost of the recall but stressed the urgency for drivers to check their vehicles to prevent potential hazards.
