Ibrahim Al-Mirghani, Sudan’s Minister of Cabinet Affairs in the Government of Peace and Unity, said the United States’ decision to designate the Sudanese Islamic Movement, commonly known as the Muslim Brotherhood, as a global terrorist organization represents a historic victory for victims of violence across Sudan.
Al-Mirghani, who is also a member of the Leadership Council of the Sudan Founding Alliance (TASIS) and the political secretary of the original Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), said the decision honors the memory of millions of victims killed in conflicts across South Sudan, Darfur, Kordofan, and other parts of the country.
In a statement posted on his account on the social media platform X, Al-Mirghani described the US move as long-awaited recognition of what he called crimes committed during decades of conflict.
He said the designation represents justice for victims of mass killings, genocide and ethnic cleansing, arguing that the Islamist movement and its former ruling structures were responsible for widespread suffering across several regions of Sudan.
Al-Mirghani added that the decision marks an important moment for the families of victims and for those who have endured displacement and violence over the years.
