A senior US official has accused General al-Burhan’s army (SAF) of carrying out a deadly strike on a hospital in East Darfur, in an attack that left dozens dead and forced the facility out of service.
Massad Boulos said the strike on Ed Daein Teaching Hospital was “horrific,” blaming the SAF for the attack in a post on X.
According to Boulos, the strike killed at least 64 people and injured around 100 others, while putting the hospital out of operation and depriving civilians of vital medical care.
The attack comes amid ongoing fighting between the SAF and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), with both sides repeatedly trading accusations over attacks on civilian infrastructure.
Responsibility for the hospital strike remains disputed. The RSF has accused the SAF of carrying out the attack, while the SAF has denied involvement.
The World Health Organization said the strike left the hospital out of service, warning that attacks on healthcare facilities continue to have devastating consequences for civilians across Sudan.
The United Nations has documented more than 200 attacks on medical facilities since the conflict began in April 2023, with over 2,000 people reported killed despite protections under international humanitarian law.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called on all parties to halt attacks on civilians and medical infrastructure and return to negotiations aimed at securing a ceasefire.
Sudan’s foreign ministry later rejected Boulos’s accusations, saying they were made without verifying the circumstances of the incident and lacked accuracy and objectivity. Khartoum warned that such statements risk misleading public opinion and could undermine efforts to restore peace and stability in the country.
