Sudan’s SAF chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has abolished the post of deputy commander-in-chief, removing Lt. Gen. Shams al-Din Kabashi as part of a wider restructuring of SAF, according to Arabic media citing an official military statement.
The decision also eliminates the roles of assistant commanders, effectively reversing Order No. 164 of 2023, which had appointed Kabashi as deputy commander alongside Yassir al-Atta and Ibrahim Jaber as assistants.
Despite being removed from their leadership posts, the affected officers will remain within the armed forces, the statement said.
The move follows a series of rapid command changes in recent days, including the appointment of al-Atta as chief of staff, pointing to a broader consolidation of power within the military leadership as the war continues.
The rollback of the 2023 command structure — introduced early in the conflict — signals a shift in how authority is centralized within General al-Burhan’s SAF, amid mounting pressure on the military leadership.
